Barbara Jarvis

Baraba changed made inroads into one of the seemingly crazy insurance practices. Barbara was a health concious New York transplant who contracted a lung infection (mycobacteria) which eventually was the principal cause of her death on November 28, 2005. Barbara's doctors believed that home was the best place for her. She was, however, stuck in Wilcox Hospital with no hope for a discharge because HMSA refused to cover total parenteral nutrition for her at home. HMSA's refusal was dollar-driven, not crazy after all. The case revealed that financial responsibility for Barbara's lengthy hospital stay would have fallen on the State of Hawaii, not HMSA. Barbara's mother came to her aid and helped her wage a successulf fight against HMSA in an Insurance Division hearing.
