I am being congratulated for a "good first showing" - sometimes an "amazing first showing" - with 21,473 votes to my opponent's 80,000. In fact, I did well enough to poll over 1,000 votes more in my primary than the Republican incumbent polled in his primary!
The high voter turnout was part of our downfall because I personally met probably fewer than 4,000 people in a district with a population of over 675,000, and we could only afford one mailing to 27,000 households where absentee ballots were requested. I believe our results show that had we been able to afford to mail every household even once, the outcome would have been very competitive or even altogether different. That is based on the fact that our conversion ratio in terms of the number of voters we reached with that single mailing was clearly very high. The mailing went to Independents and Republicans as well as Democrats resulting in an estimated 7,000 to 9,000 being received by voters who cast ballots in the Republican primary),
