Brent Adams, 10/18/64-6/26/08

Brent was diagnosed with Stage IV multiple myleoma and a very young age. he fought to change HMSA's out-of-date restriction on donor bone marrow transplants for multiple myeloma even while he was suffering from the painful and debilitating recurrence of his stage IV disease. Brent proved that donor transplants are now the gold standard for treatment of symptomatic multiple myeloma, that they offer the best chance for extended survival. HMSA was ordered to pay for Brent's transplant, but it came too late to give him a fighting chance.
HMSA pressed on with the case anyway and won an appeal on the argument that its policy specifically excluded donor transplants for multiple myeloma. Given the opinions of the 14 hematology experts whose support for the procedure persuaded the Insurance Division hearing panel, the exclusion was nothing to be proud of.

Thanks, Brent. We remember.
